One of the things I like the most is working with 3D. This experience was made using the awsome 3D software Luxology Modo and then finalizing on Photoshop. I am still practicing with lights. When this project came to my hands, it was part of the W Shopping project. The client wanted to create their own brand for this supermarket. This brand was intended to be the main supermarket anchor for W Shopping concept.
In the W Shopping, the W stands for 'world'. The client's own world, where one could be able to find everything and do everything. Then 'Blu' came out of the blue by association: 'The world is blue!'. But then, due to the 'phonetics' and for the fact that it was an anglo-saxon word, we took the decision to make it 'Blu', so the average portuguese could spell just like any english-speaking person would do.

This is the logo proposed for the Kehilat Beit Israel. A growing tree (Beit Israel), with its different 'branchs'. All different from each other, but, all part of the same tree, with its roots in the Land of Israel. A golden menorah, symbol of Israel, Light between the nations of the earth.
That's what I thought when creating the logo.

Haverim, haverot...friends!
This weekend (March 17/18th) is very special for me. For the first time I've participated in a Kabbalah Shabbat at the Kehilat Beit Yisrael, in Lisbon.
I couldn't be better received. It was like home. It was very nice to hear and say 'Shabbat shalom', 'Toda!' or 'ani lo medaber ivrit, aval ani mevin mila po, mila cham!'.
I wish I could understand every word of hebrew the text (although there was a traduction/explanation) and take full part on the service.
This is a first step towards a long and hard way to Beit Israel.

She passed away last Saturday, May 18th, 2007.
She lived a long life. She had sons and daughters, which in turn gave her grand-sons and grand- daughters, which in turn gave her great-grand-sons and great grand-daughters. What can be better than a fruitfull life? Like the poem of Gibran says, "You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth".

'Challenge as a Way of Life', a brazilian novel.

For someone born in the brazilian semi-arid northern region, the word 'challenge' is one of the first to be learned upon childhood. A 'challenge' is to be born, to grow up, to have water, food, education and the list goes on. But on the face of such adversities, we are thaught to look at them as something to be overcome. This doesn't apply to that specific region only, but one could say that it strongly shapes the spirit of most of its people.
Despite adversities, being born on that area can be an enriching experience for its traditions and folklore. Some of the finest brazilian musicians and artists come from the northern states.
Born in 1963, in a small town in the middle of the of Pernambuco, whose capital is Recife, I grew up making my own toys from mud, wood and whatever happen fo tall into my hands. It was almost like 'what can done with this?'. By six, we moved to São Paulo, due to a draught in the begining of the seventies. Everything was lost, but not life!
By that time, I began drawing and started to perfect my skills, thanks to my dad, which amazed me by drawing a small donkey for a school homework:_'Wow! I dind't know my father could draw this way!'
In 1977, during a contest to create the school's logotype, I got the first place and decided:'_I am going to work with identity.' Although I didn't know what was that precisely.
At the present day living in Portugal, for 20 years now, dividing time between a Senior Graphic Designer position at HPP EuroRSCG (part of EuroRSCG Worldwide) and being a father of three boys, challenges are what I have the most now.
My graphic design career began in the 80's, by producing drawings for a screen-printing company. After three years, I thought it was time to take a new step and begin working for a small advertising agency in the nearby town of São Bernardo do Campo, the heart of the brazilian industry. Once there, I could work and get acquainted with the process of developing corporate identity projects throughout its implementation. I also took classes on illustration at a local art school and a Graphic Production course at the Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing, in São Paulo, at night.
As a matter-of-fact, being self-taught and consider myself a graphic designer is a challenge in itself, but I look at this as 'something to overcome', although the work I have done all these years can prove that the challenges were worth the efforts done.

The University of Coimbra is the 'center' of portuguese university life, it's the 'Jerusalem' of the student life.
The Choir is composed by former students and includes personalities like Mario Soares, the former portuguese Prime-Minister and President.
The University was founded in 1290. The students keep the tradition of wearing the 'capa-negra' (black coat).
We dedided to use materials that would emulate the ancient note books, when there was no Xerox copiers available to produce a 'sebenta' (it's a rough notebook, a rough study book).
But...'Yes, we asked for a brochure, but we can olnly produce a leaflet...sorry!

Rebranding the 'Presidencia da Republica'

The Presidency of the Republic and the President himself are the highest state figures in Portugal. During years, the Coat of Arms of the Republic has been interpreted and re-interpreted by the very different printing companies and, once again, it sometimes relayed on the mood of the typesetter.
The law establishing the rules for the construction of the Coat of Arms, in its sense, is very simple. Back in 1911, they didn't worried if the typeface would be condensed, bold, light...anything! Their only concern was about the law itself and a good one by the way.
The actual Presidency decided it was about time to put some order on such an issue. The Coat of Arms was re-styled, accordingly to the law. A typeface was chosen for the Presidency and the President, which would not be changed. Also a general purpose typeface was chosen and should be applied to specify, addresses, names, titles, etc.
The portuguese take great pride on their history, symbols and tradition. The Presidency is not an exception.

Mao Tse Tony_The lost brother of Mao

From time to time, some people come up with amazing and unbelievable stories about social and political personalities, spreading doubt and confusion on the established version of History. Here is one:_During the Cultural Revolution, Mr. Mao, obsessed by the idea of getting the power for himself and by the idea of developing a touristic resort up in the middle of Gobi Desert, banishes his own twin brother to the northern province. AMAZING!! A TWIN BROTHER!!! I guess you've heard of this!
No one ever saw a picture of this 'lost twin brother' until now. Lost among other misterious disappearances stories and found by the monks of an ancient buddhist order, here is the picture of Mao Tse Tony, the late and younger brother of Mr. Mao.
Another intriguing artifact found with this picture was a bank note that depicts the figure of Mao Tse Tony and the name of a central bank which lead us to believe that Mao Tse Tony tried to create an independent state in the sands of Gobi Desert. But this, is a secret that he took with him to the grave and it is lost for now. Who knows what the future could bring us.

A friend of mine, who now lives and works in Germany as car safety engineer, asked asked me to develop a brand for a product related to child safety.
KD (in brazilian portuguese 'ka-de'. The 'de' like in the french word 'degradé') phonetically, for a brazilian, it sounds as a question 'Where is it?'
KD is Kids Device. Something that the kid would ask for before getting into the car.
There's still a long way to go. These sort of things take a long time to develop, test and implement. Let us 'sit' and wait!!!

Lilipop is a brand created by a jewel designer back in 2003. She wanted a logo that illustrated the uncompromised style of hers. The name immediately remembered us of 'lollipop' candies. Ah, the card's signature 'Peugeot Visa. Fala por si' means two things in portuguese: the card speaks for itself and also for you.

A dear friend of mine decided to help and spread the idea of reading for blind people at her college last year. The headline, making use of dialogue baloons, says: 'You read. I hear. We see.'
She wanted to open the eyes of those who see to the blind people reality: Some literary masterpieces may never 'be seen'. So the idea was to give voice to books not translated into Braille, making them 'see new light' in the blind people's mind.

Every year, the Metro (Underground) and Carris (bus service) suffered some important money losses due to the 'unwanted guests'. To warn and prevent them from using the transport system, we decided to make use of a current portuguese expression to designate a 'wise guy': Chico-esperto!
The message states:_We have an eye on you, wise guy! You don't pay the ticket, then you'll pay the fine. There's no way to go!
Also a flyer was produced. The message used was:_'There is no 'place' for wise guys here!'

I love languages. When I was a kid, I even went to japanese classes due to my passion to Yassue, a beautiful japanese girl, which was my neighbour. Sorry! this was just an apart...then came the arabic language, thanks to my schools mates 'min Lubnan' Ali and Mohammed Abdouni, (don't worry, i didn't fall in love this time), which I have learned to use the alphabet though my spoken skills are not so good and guess what...hebrew! I like to play with my friends saying that one of these days I am moving to the Negev Desert, start working in a kibbutz or working with solar energy. Anyway, this was supposed to be about typography!!!!

Hyundai 'Sol da Meia-Noite Expedition

Hyundai's reseller in Portugal organized and funded an expedition to Cape Nord, in the Artic Circle. Now, guess what was the vehicle used?? Nah, not a Santa Fe, not a Tucson nut a Huyndai Athos. Yes, that tiny little car and it worked out just fine. That is as 'Acthos of courage'!

Digo in portuguese means 'I say'. Digo was created for people to speak up their mind in form of graphical contents. Business cards, invitations, t-shirt. Direct Mail campaign for Pousadas de Portugal 2002

The main guideline for this campaign was 'discover the world of Pousadas'. Since the Pousadas have plenty of historical elements and also the portuguese history is tightly connected to the history of the Discoveries, we thought it would be nice to put in the managers hands 'a chart' that would guide them into new directions and places offered by the Pousadas Business department. We also offered a compass and remembered them that, in some of the Pousadas areas, they could get involved into outdoor activities, such as trekking, which was pretty 'en vogue' by the time.

Vista Alegre and its brands

Vista Alegre is one of the most well known fine earthenware companies in the world. Back in 1991, I was working for Design Nucleus, at the Lisbon branch and they gave the responsibility of redrawing the Vista Alegre logo and its brands. The logo of Vista Alegre and its backstamp were based on a version of 1824, the year it was given the royal seal.
The logo for Sociedade de Porcelanas Coimbra was decided to make only few changes for the brand was also well known and traditional. The problem was typographic. Most of the time, the brand would appear represented with different typefaces depending on the typesetter mood. Almost one year later, I had to create these packages for its hotel earthenware.
Anyway, I hope it lasts some decades too.

Wine Label for Pousadas de Portugal (Hotels)

Wine producing, in some cases, was part of the activities held at the monasteries throughout the Peninsula. Some of them are now historical monuments and also part of the Pousadas hotels chain. In order to create a wine label that would reflect that tradition, I've searched through medieval manuscripts and eventually found a typeface that worked just fine for the label. The green and red colours are used to differentiate the green and red wine offered by the Pousadas.

While I was writing down this piece, I discovered that Patricia and Natércia bear the same characters on their names. The only differences are the diacrit signs below and above the letters. That points to something very interesting: those small things, that normally we dont't look at, make the difference between us, even though we look all the same from a first glance.

One Shopping, Oporto, 2006

The idea of creating an unique place in the city of Oporto was the main guideline for this project.
One was the name chosen. It was short, easy to pronounce even in portuguese, memorable and resumed the idea of uniqueness on itself: ONE. The One. It would be the only shopping in the Oporto metropolitan area with an Ikea store inside.

Aldeias do Xisto, 2005

Proposed identity for rural tourism villages in northern Portugal (Shale Villages). The villages share a common house construction material: Shale. Houses are being refurbished and comunal spaces are being redrawn to attract tourists from whitin and abroad Portugal. The logo emulates a wall made of shale.
In the end, the client based its actual logo on our proposal. That was a shame!

Demos portugali tis Patmos, Heleniki Demokratia.
This picture was taken in the Island of Patmos, Aegean Sea, Greece. Living in that island, surrounded by stones, cactus and goats, I guess I know how John wrote the Apocalipsis. Man that was a 'trip'! Ok. The island is cool, you have a nice view from up the hill. Opa!!Parakalo!

Everyone should have 15 minutes of fame in life. I had mine. This was a campaign for Cofidis (a private bank). This is how i look like...ok. There is some Photoshop retouching. Actually, I am a swedish prince (blue eyes, blonde, tall...och jåg tallar engelska, spanska, portugisiska, franska): Nah!! just kidding! That's me. Native American.

EUL's 50th Anniversary (University Stadium of Lisbon)

The 'Estadio Universitário de Lisboa' completed 50 years and they wanted to share the moment with the community. The client wanted to create a logo for the event and a medal to mark it. The logo bears 5 stars. One for each decade of the Stadium.

PT Corporate Day, 2005

PT Corporate, a branch of PT Telecom, organized a Corporate Day meeting, where it would present its new products and services to the top directors and managers of market leading companies, mainly portuguese. My role was to create the image for the event and its application on support material such as brochures, badges and information material.

Poster, 2006

A friend of mine call me up to create a poster for a play she would be participating. The title is a complete joke. It translates into something like...'Dickfish's liver' (iscas/liver is a portuguese dish). I decided to use this red tone for the show is a bit sensual, passionate...sexy. I've searched through those 30's, 40's and 50's film posters to create the look. Anyway, they loved that.

EDP Annual Report, 2005

The 2004 EDP Annual Report received the Best Annual Report Award given by Deloitte and also the Graphic Industry Best Annual Report award. This year edition also receveid the same award by Deloitte. EDP is the main national electricity producer and distributor.

PT Telecom is promoting its WiFi access service througout the country. My role on this project was to visualize the 'hot spot' for the shopping centres, using for that Maxon Cinema 4D.

Lake Resort, 2006

Lake Resort is a luxury hotel and spa complex in Algarve, Portugal. They wanted to promote the complex as a unique experience, where one could enjoy a bit of everything and yet, get the whole of its quality service. Through the brochures pages, the viewer is envited to experiment the services provided by the Resort.

Imocom Brochure, 2002

Imocom is a real estate and construction company in Portugal. They built up some of the main buildings in Parque das Nações, the new business area of Lisbon. Imocom wanted to project an image of a modern company, in line with the newest trends and technologies available on buildings construction. The look was supposed to be clean, which we achieved by combining layers of images, transparency graphics and text. The client still considers that its main reference brochure.

Caixa Geral de Depósitos is the biggest portuguese bank and with this brochure they wanted to present 'A Caixa' as the promoter of regional development by providing loans to municipalities for specific projects such as transportation, social and community affaires. The brochure presented 'A Caixa' as a solid yet modern and dynamic bank, which would provide the best and most effective solution against the private competition.

Mega Rede Guidelines, 2005

The process of creating the brand Mega Rede was very direct and simple. One of its shareholders is PT Telecom, which is the 'mega' communication giant of Portugal. Thus, the service, which is a payment service, would benefit from its network and credibility, making it virtually accessible all over the portuguese territory. My role on this project was to produce the brand guidelines and its application on a variety of media. Here are some samples.

Identity for W Shopping (Santarém, Portugal)

W Shopping is part of a major european mall management group. My role on this project was to participate on chosing the name for it and then develop the identity and all its application throughout different media, wich included developing the advertising campaign for its launching.
The name 'W' came from the simple fact that this shopping should represent a 'world apart' in Santarem. A world where one could 'buy and find everything'.
